New Convention Centre Signals Asaba’s Rising Status As Hub For Tourism & Global Engagement

A New Landmark for Asaba
THE city of Asaba recorded another milestone in its urban and cultural development journey with the commissioning of the Newton Jibunoh International Convention Centre (NJICC) at the Nelson Mandela Gardens and Resort.
The facility, named after renowned environmentalist, philanthropist and desertification campaigner, Dr. Newton Jibunoh, was unveiled amid tributes from traditional rulers, government officials and stakeholders who described it as a project capable of transforming the city’s economic, tourism and intellectual landscape.
Leading the commendations was the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, who praised Dr. Jibunoh’s decades-long contributions to environmental advocacy, cultural preservation and community development.
Convention Centre as a Legacy Project
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Asagba described the centre as more than a physical structure, noting that it represents a lasting legacy that will benefit future generations.
According to him, the facility embodies excellence, innovation and service to humanity while creating opportunities for economic expansion, youth empowerment, education and international partnerships.
The monarch said the project would strengthen Asaba’s position as a destination for conferences, cultural exhibitions, tourism activities and intellectual exchanges.
He further observed that the centre arrives at a time when cities increasingly compete through their ability to attract investment, ideas, talent and global partnerships.
“Great cities are built not merely by roads and buildings but by institutions that stimulate thought, encourage collaboration and inspire progress,” he stated.
Positioning Asaba for Global Relevance
The royal father noted that the convention centre reflects a broader vision of transforming Asaba into a modern and globally competitive city.
He commended the management of Nelson Mandela Gardens and Resort for supporting initiatives that promote tourism, environmental sustainability and cultural development in Delta State.
According to him, the facility reinforces Asaba’s growing reputation as a city of opportunity, innovation and hospitality with increasing strategic importance within Nigeria and across Africa.
The monarch described the commissioning as a defining moment in Delta State’s development journey, where tourism, culture, environmental consciousness and economic advancement intersect.
Delta Government Highlights Environmental Commitment
Representing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at the event, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, linked the commissioning to the commemoration of the 2026 World Desertification and Drought Day.
He said the state government remains committed to environmental sustainability through programmes focused on ecosystem protection, afforestation, climate resilience and sustainable land development.
According to him, the convention centre would serve as a platform for policy discussions, innovation, research and international cooperation on environmental and development issues.
The commissioner stressed that desertification, climate change and land degradation remain major global threats requiring sustained collective action.
Celebrating the ‘Desert Warrior’
A significant focus of the event was the recognition of Dr. Newton Jibunoh, widely known as the “Desert Warrior” for his campaigns against desertification.
Stakeholders described the naming of the facility after him as a fitting tribute to a man whose environmental activism has attracted both national and international recognition.
In his remarks, Dr. Jibunoh reflected on his experiences, including his famous Sahara Desert expeditions, while emphasizing the urgent need for environmental protection.
He warned that human activities and natural disasters continue to degrade the planet, calling for greater awareness, afforestation efforts and investment in green energy solutions to address climate challenges.
Gathering of Distinguished Personalities
The commissioning attracted an array of dignitaries, including representatives of the Delta State Government, traditional rulers and prominent citizens.
Dr. Jibunoh expressed appreciation to all guests who attended the unveiling, describing environmental protection as a shared responsibility that demands collective commitment.
For many participants, the opening of the Newton Jibunoh International Convention Centre represented not only the celebration of an accomplished environmental advocate but also the emergence of a new institution expected to contribute significantly to Asaba’s future growth and global visibility.
