Akwa Ibom Police Bust Alleged Stolen Phone Network, Recover 36 Handsets

Suspect Re-Arrested Over Alleged Stolen Phones
THE Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspected receiver and distributor of stolen mobile phones, recovering 36 devices believed to be linked to robbery operations within and beyond the state.
The suspect, identified as Musa Idris, was apprehended along the Calabar–Itu Road corridor following intelligence reports connecting him to criminal activities involving stolen phones.
Police authorities said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle organised robbery networks operating across the region.
Previous Arrest Raises Further Concerns
Addressing journalists at the Command Headquarters in Uyo, Baba Azare disclosed that the suspect had previously been arrested in October 2025 over alleged armed robbery-related offences.
According to the police commissioner, more than 200 Android phones suspected to have been stolen were recovered during the earlier operation.
Investigators believe the latest seizure may be connected to broader criminal activities involving the movement and resale of stolen mobile devices.
Police Probe Cross-Border Criminal Network
The commissioner revealed that preliminary investigations and statements obtained from the suspect pointed to the existence of a larger criminal syndicate.
According to him, intelligence gathered so far suggests that stolen phones may be transported and resold through networks operating beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Security operatives have therefore intensified efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals allegedly connected to the operation.
Police authorities maintain that dismantling such networks remains critical to reducing robbery-related crimes and disrupting illegal markets for stolen goods.
Crackdown on False Security Alerts
Beyond the phone recovery operation, the police command also announced the conclusion of investigations into a separate case involving the alleged dissemination of false security information.
The suspect in that matter, identified as Akaninyene Udo, popularly known online as “AK Philo,” was accused of circulating a threatening message capable of causing public panic.
Police said the case has been charged to court, while the accused has been remanded in a correctional facility pending further legal proceedings.
Enforcement and Police Welfare Initiatives
The command also unveiled plans to begin statewide enforcement against vehicles operating with missing, altered, obscured or defaced registration plates.
Motorists were advised to ensure compliance with existing traffic and registration regulations to avoid sanctions.
Meanwhile, the commissioner commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for providing First Aid kits to police commands nationwide, describing the initiative as a boost to personnel welfare and operational readiness.
Several officers were also recognised with commendation certificates for exemplary conduct and professionalism.
