Nigerian Table Tennis Stars Drop In Global Standings

Nigerian Players Suffer Setback in ITTF Rankings
NIGERIA’S campaign to maintain a strong presence in global table tennis has suffered a setback following the release of the latest International Table Tennis Federation rankings.
Leading the decline is Quadri Aruna, Nigeria’s most accomplished table tennis player and former African number one, who dropped 20 places to World No. 76.
The latest ranking also pushed Aruna down to fourth position in Africa, marking a significant fall for a player long regarded as the continent’s leading figure in the sport.
Omotayo Also Loses Ground
Fellow Nigerian star Olajide Omotayo also recorded a decline in the rankings.
Omotayo slipped six places to World No. 193 and now occupies 12th position in Africa.
The development highlights a difficult phase for Nigerian table tennis, especially at a time when African players are facing increasing competition on the international circuit.
Sports analysts say ranking drops often reflect inconsistent performances at international tournaments, limited appearances in ranking events, or early exits from competitions that attract valuable points.
Focus Shifts to Recovery
Despite the setback, both Aruna and Omotayo are expected to target a quick recovery in upcoming international competitions.
Aruna, who has consistently represented Nigeria at the Olympics, World Championships and African tournaments, remains one of the continent’s most experienced players and is still widely viewed as capable of returning to the top ranks.
Observers believe the next few months will be critical as players intensify preparations for major continental and global tournaments that could reshape the rankings once again.
For Nigerian table tennis, the latest standings serve as both a warning and a motivation to regain lost ground on the world stage.
