Social Media Video Triggers Official Sanctions
TWO officials of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA) have been suspended after a viral TikTok video allegedly showed them sharing cash while on duty in Asaba, Delta State.
The footage, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, generated intense criticism from residents and online users, many of whom questioned the conduct of the officers and called for disciplinary action.
In response, the management of DESTMA announced the immediate detention of the officers and the commencement of internal disciplinary proceedings.
Officers Suspended Pending Probe
The agency disclosed that the officers had been stripped of their operational tools and uniforms while investigations continue.
According to DESTMA, the directive was issued by the agency’s Director-General, Hon. Dr. Benjamin Essien Okiemute, who ordered that the officers remain in custody at the agency’s headquarters in Asaba pending the outcome of the inquiry.
Officials said the disciplinary process would determine whether the conduct captured in the video violated the operational and ethical code guiding traffic management personnel in the state.
Controversy Over Source Of Cash
Although the video prompted allegations of extortion from members of the public, the affected officers reportedly insisted that the money was not illegally obtained.
They claimed the cash was a personal gift and denied engaging in misconduct or collecting money from motorists unlawfully.
Nevertheless, the agency said the action portrayed in the video was inappropriate for officers in uniform and capable of damaging public confidence in the organisation.
DESTMA Vows To Protect Institutional Integrity
Speaking on the development, the Director-General reiterated the authority’s commitment to professionalism and accountability.
“DESTMA operates on a zero-tolerance policy regarding any actions that compromise our institutional integrity,” he said.
He further stressed that public officers are expected to maintain discipline and avoid actions capable of creating suspicion or undermining the credibility of the agency.
According to him, the authority would continue efforts to identify and remove personnel whose actions tarnish the image of the organisation.
Public Attention On Enforcement Agencies
The incident has again drawn attention to growing public demands for transparency and accountability among enforcement agencies in Nigeria.
Observers say the swift action taken by DESTMA reflects increasing pressure on public institutions to respond decisively to allegations of misconduct amplified through social media platforms.
The agency assured residents that the ongoing investigation would be thorough and that appropriate sanctions would be applied if the officers are found culpable.
