Nigerian Army Expands Operational Footprint Across Six States
New Formations to Strengthen Security Response
THE Nigerian Army has established new formations and units across six states as part of efforts to strengthen operational capacity and respond more effectively to emerging security threats nationwide.
The announcement was made by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, during the opening of the First Bi-Annual Chief of Army Staff Conference 2026 in Abuja.
Strategic Deployment Across Key Locations
According to the Army Chief, the new structures include the 15 Brigade and affiliated units in Anambra and Imo States, the 12 Battalion in Anyigba (Kogi State), and the 226 Battalion in Ganye (Adamawa State).
Other additions include the 247 Reconnaissance Battalion in Mubi, Army Headquarters Logistics Base 4 in Gusau, Logistics Base 5 in Ilorin, and Operation Savannah Shield in the North-Central region.
Security Challenges Driving Expansion
Lt-Gen. Shaibu said the security environment remains volatile and increasingly complex, driven by insurgency, banditry, and other asymmetric threats across the country.
He explained that the Army’s expansion strategy is designed to improve rapid response capabilities and strengthen its operational footprint in strategic locations.
Improved Coordination and Intelligence Operations
The Army Chief also highlighted improvements in intelligence-driven operations and inter-agency collaboration, noting that recent successes include the elimination of a high-ranking terrorist commander.
He further commended troops for their resilience and professionalism in ongoing operations nationwide.
