2027 Elections: Corps Members To Form Backbone Of INEC Workforce

INEC Moves to Strengthen 2027 Election Logistics
THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed plans to mobilise about 1.4 million members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for the conduct of the 2027 general elections across Nigeria.
The commission said the move forms part of broader preparations aimed at ensuring credible, transparent and efficient electoral processes in the country.
INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, reportedly made the disclosure during discussions on election planning and logistics, stressing the critical role corps members have continued to play in Nigeria’s democratic process.
According to the commission, the large-scale mobilisation is necessary due to the increasing number of polling units, ad hoc staff requirements and the complexity of election management in a country with over 90 million registered voters.
Corps Members Remain Central to Election Operations
For years, NYSC members have served as ad hoc electoral officials during elections, handling responsibilities ranging from voter accreditation to result collation and logistics support.
INEC noted that the anticipated deployment for 2027 would cover presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state assembly elections across the federation.
The electoral body explained that corps members are often preferred because of their nationwide spread, educational qualifications and perceived neutrality during elections.
The commission also stated that preparations would include extensive training programmes, technological orientation and security coordination to ensure the personnel are adequately equipped ahead of the polls.
Concerns Over Security and Welfare
Despite the planned mobilisation, concerns have continued to trail the safety and welfare of corps members during elections, especially in areas affected by insecurity and electoral violence.
Several stakeholders have repeatedly called for improved insurance coverage, better remuneration and stronger security protection for ad hoc electoral workers.
INEC, however, assured that lessons from previous elections were being studied to improve operational efficiency and protect personnel deployed for the exercise.
Political observers believe the early preparations signal the commission’s determination to avoid logistical setbacks that affected previous elections in parts of the country.
The 2027 general elections are expected to be one of the largest electoral exercises in Africa, with political parties already intensifying consultations and realignments ahead of the contest.
