Uwem Ekanem Takes Charge As Akwa Ibom Sets Up Aviation Ministry

State Moves to Institutionalise Aviation Growth
THE Akwa Ibom State Government has taken a decisive step toward consolidating its aviation ambitions with the appointment of Uwem Ekanem as Special Adviser on Aviation and Airport Development, placing him in immediate charge of the newly created Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development.
The move, which took effect on 4 May 2026, signals a strategic shift from project-based aviation management to a more structured institutional framework aimed at driving long-term sector growth.
Government officials say the ministry’s creation is part of broader efforts to strengthen infrastructure, improve operational efficiency, and position the state as a key aviation hub within Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea region.
Experienced Insider at the Helm
Ekanem’s appointment reflects a preference for industry experience and institutional memory. Before his elevation, he served as Chief Executive Officer of the Ibom Airport Development Company and previously held several operational and commercial roles within the aviation ecosystem.
Between 2015 and 2019, he oversaw airport operations, managing safety protocols, security systems, and service delivery. Earlier, as Principal Commercial Officer, he played a central role in revenue generation and concession management.
His private-sector experience includes a stint with Virgin Nigeria Airways, where he served as Airport Manager in Calabar, as well as earlier roles in aviation logistics and ticketing operations.
Analysts note that his familiarity with both regulatory and commercial aspects of aviation could prove critical as the state seeks to scale operations and attract investment.
Bridging Policy and Infrastructure
The creation of the aviation ministry comes at a time when Akwa Ibom is expanding its airport infrastructure and international reach. Industry observers interpret the move as an attempt to bridge policy coordination gaps that often slow down large-scale aviation projects in Nigeria.
By centralising oversight under a dedicated ministry, the state aims to streamline decision-making, improve regulatory compliance, and enhance coordination between agencies and private investors.
The government has indicated that Ekanem will serve in an interim capacity pending the appointment of a substantive commissioner, suggesting that further institutional structuring is underway.
Economic Ambitions and Strategic Positioning
Beyond administrative restructuring, the move reflects Akwa Ibom’s broader economic ambitions. With increasing air traffic, planned infrastructure upgrades, and ongoing investments in tourism and trade, the aviation sector is emerging as a key pillar of the state’s development strategy.
Experts argue that effective management of the new ministry will be crucial in translating these ambitions into measurable outcomes, particularly in areas such as job creation, logistics, and regional connectivity.
The appointment of Ekanem is therefore seen not just as a personnel decision, but as part of a larger effort to reposition Akwa Ibom within Nigeria’s evolving aviation landscape.
