Police Confirm Arrest Over Effurun Shooting

THE Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and transfer of a serving officer following the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun.

The incident, which has generated widespread public anger, gained national attention after video footage circulated online showing the victim restrained and pleading for his life moments before he was allegedly shot.

Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi condemned the killing and pledged accountability.

What Police Said Happened

According to a statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer Bright Edafe, officers attached to the Effurun Area Command had responded to intelligence suggesting a suspect was attempting to transport a firearm.

During the operation on 26 April, police said the team leader, Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his weapon in breach of Force Order 237, leading to the suspect’s death.

Force Order 237 regulates police use of firearms and circumstances under which lethal force may be applied.

Officer Moved to Abuja

The command said the officer has been:

• Arrested
• Queried internally
• Transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja
• Referred to the Force Disciplinary Committee

Possible criminal prosecution may also follow, depending on findings.

The case escalated after footage shared online appeared to show the victim with his hands tied behind his back while begging officers for mercy.

Witness accounts and activists allege he was first shot in the leg before being fatally shot at close range.
