Oborevwori Showcases Delta Model, Urges Fair Representation Across Nigeria

Oborevwori Calls for Inclusive Governance Nationwide
DELTA State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has called for the adoption of inclusive governance across Nigeria, describing it as essential for national unity, social stability, and sustainable development.
The governor made the remarks while delivering a lecture titled “Inclusive Governance and National Unity: Lessons from Delta State for a More United Nigeria” at the annual lecture series of the Yoruba Tennis Club in Lagos.
He argued that Nigeria’s ethnic, religious, and regional diversity requires a governance model rooted in fairness, broad participation, and equal opportunity.
Delta State Presented as Working Example
Governor Oborevwori highlighted Delta State’s development strategy under his MORE Agenda—Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.
According to him, the framework has helped drive more balanced development across the state’s three senatorial districts.
He cited progress in:
- Road and transport infrastructure
- Healthcare expansion
- Educational investments
- Youth empowerment
- Social welfare inclusion
The governor said governance must be measured not only by projects delivered, but by how equitably benefits are distributed.
Health and Infrastructure Gains
Among the achievements listed was the enrolment of over 2.7 million residents in the state health insurance scheme.
He also referenced major projects such as the Effurun-Warri flyovers and rural road networks, saying they were designed to deepen economic integration and reduce spatial inequality.
Analysts note that transport connectivity often plays a major role in linking communities and easing ethnic or regional competition over resources.
Youth and Vulnerable Groups in Focus
The governor said more than 300,000 people had benefited from programmes focused on skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, and employment.
He also cited the Widows Welfare Scheme and support measures for vulnerable citizens as examples of social inclusion.
According to him, opportunities in Delta State are extended to both indigenes and non-indigenes, reinforcing a broader sense of belonging.
National Reforms and Shared Identity
Oborevwori commended Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as bold economic decisions, including fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate reforms.
He argued that stronger revenues at subnational levels have improved the ability of states and local governments to undertake development projects.
The governor also called for deliberate efforts to build a shared Nigerian identity through:
- Education reform
- Responsible media engagement
- Youth-focused programmes
- Celebration of cultural diversity
Proposal for Regular National Conference
As part of his recommendations, he proposed a national conference every ten years involving government, traditional rulers, civil society, and other stakeholders to review progress on inclusion and cohesion.
He concluded that unity must be built from the grassroots through equitable governance in every state and local government.
Dignitaries Attend Lecture
Also present were Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Mudashiru Obasa, and Yoruba Tennis Club Chairman Olawunmi Gasper.
Sanwo-Olu praised the club’s approaching centenary and welcomed guests from Delta State.
