Casualties Mount To 60 In Calabar Gas Explosion

Victim Count Doubles After Initial Reports
THE number of victims affected by Saturday’s gas explosion in Calabar, Cross River State, has risen sharply to 60, according to the state government.
The updated figure was disclosed by the Commissioner for Health, Henry Ayuk, during an official visit to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), where many of the injured are currently receiving treatment.
The new casualty figure marks a significant increase from the earlier estimate of 30 victims announced by Governor Bassey Otu shortly after the incident.
Government Steps Up Medical Response
Speaking during the hospital visit, Ayuk explained that the government is taking additional steps to manage the growing number of casualties and ensure that all victims receive adequate medical care.
He revealed that patients with less severe burn injuries would be transferred to the General Hospital in Calabar. The move, he said, is aimed at reducing congestion at UCTH and improving the quality of care for critically injured patients.
“Our goal is to ensure efficient and prompt treatment for all victims,” Ayuk stated, noting that the redistribution of patients would help health workers manage the situation more effectively.
On-the-Ground Assessment at UCTH
The commissioner’s visit formed part of a broader effort by the state government to assess the situation firsthand and coordinate emergency response measures.
Accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor on General Duties, Ekpeyong Akiba, Ayuk was received by the Chief Medical Director of UCTH, Ikpeme Ikpeme, who provided updates on the condition of the victims and ongoing treatment efforts.
Hospital authorities briefed the delegation on the scale of injuries and the resources being deployed to manage the situation.
Government Pledges Support for Victims
Governor Bassey Otu had earlier assured that the state government would bear the cost of medical treatment for all affected persons, a commitment reaffirmed during the visit.
Officials say the intervention is part of a coordinated emergency response designed to cushion the impact of the incident on victims and their families.
Explosion Linked to Gas Leak
The explosion, which occurred on Saturday, was traced to a gas leak at a plant in the Edibe Edibe area of Calabar South.
The blast reportedly affected nearby residential buildings, leaving dozens injured and causing widespread panic in the community.
Ongoing Response and Investigation
Health authorities continue to monitor the condition of victims while working to stabilise those with severe injuries.
Meanwhile, government agencies are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the gas leak to prevent future occurrences.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over safety standards in residential and industrial areas, particularly in densely populated communities.
