AFCON Drama Deepens As Morocco Captain Refuses Trophy

Captain Takes Stand Against Controversial Decision
MOROCCO’S captain, Achraf Hakimi, has sparked widespread debate across African football after publicly rejecting the Africa Cup of Nations title awarded to his country following a controversial ruling by Confederation of African Football.
In a bold and unexpected move, the Paris Saint-Germain defender announced he would refuse to accept the winner’s medal, insisting that Senegal national football team were the rightful champions based on their performance on the pitch.
CAF Ruling Overturns Final Result
The controversy stems from CAF’s decision to overturn the result of the AFCON final held in Rabat. Although Senegal secured a 1–0 victory in extra time, the match was later awarded to Morocco as a 3–0 forfeit.
CAF’s Appeals Committee ruled that Senegal breached competition regulations after their players briefly walked off the pitch in protest of a late penalty decision. Despite returning to complete the match, the temporary exit was deemed sufficient grounds for forfeiture.
The ruling nullified Senegal’s on-field victory and handed Morocco the title—triggering intense reactions from fans, analysts, and players alike.
Hakimi’s Ethical Protest
Rejecting the administrative decision, Hakimi made it clear that his stance was rooted in sporting integrity rather than defiance of authority.
“This is football. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose,” he said, emphasising that Senegal had earned the victory fairly. He added that accepting the trophy would undermine the efforts and emotions of the opposing team.
While acknowledging CAF’s authority, Hakimi stressed that he could not personally recognise a title that did not reflect the outcome of play.
His position introduces a rare instance where a player openly distances himself from a governing body’s decision in favour of what he considers the true spirit of the game.
A Final Shrouded in Controversy
The AFCON final had already been marred by tension. After a goalless 90 minutes, Senegal took the lead in extra time through a decisive goal, appearing to secure the championship.
However, late drama unfolded when Morocco were awarded a penalty after a VAR review in stoppage time. The decision sparked protests from Senegal players, who briefly left the pitch before returning to resume play.
Morocco failed to convert the penalty, and Senegal held on to win—only for the result to be overturned days later.
Divisions Within African Football
Hakimi’s refusal has amplified ongoing debates about the balance between regulatory enforcement and sporting fairness. While Moroccan football authorities have accepted CAF’s ruling, the captain’s dissent highlights a growing divide within the football community.
With Senegal reportedly preparing further appeals, the controversy surrounding the AFCON final continues to unfold, raising critical questions about governance, fairness, and the integrity of results in African football.
