Reimagining Urban Experience Through Technology
NIGERIA has entered the smart city technology space with the launch of MyCityApp, an integrated digital platform aimed at transforming how people interact with cities across the country.
Developed under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, the application aggregates tourism information, cultural assets, entertainment hubs, housing options and employment listings into a single accessible platform.
Officials say the initiative is intended to strengthen innovation, drive digital inclusion and improve information dissemination within urban centres.
Citizen Engagement at the Core
At the unveiling ceremony, Bukola Ajayi of MTN Nigeria said the platform was engineered to build a centralised civic data framework that encourages citizen participation.
Beyond tourism, the app allows residents to report local incidents and challenges, creating a feedback loop between communities and authorities.
“We plan to deploy the app across the 36 states and the FCT, targeting five million registered users,” Ajayi said, adding that its performance would be assessed by measurable economic and social impact, particularly for small businesses operating within featured cities.
She highlighted the platform’s offline functionality as a key feature, expanding usability in areas with limited internet access.
Aligning Culture with Economic Growth
Minister Hanatu Musa Musawa described MyCityApp as a strategic digital investment aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to her, Nigeria’s cultural and creative industries remain a major national asset that can be further amplified through technology.
“Nigeria is blessed — not only in culture but also in landscape and diversity,” she said. “This app allows us to rediscover ourselves while opening new economic opportunities.”
By positioning MyCityApp as both a tourism enhancer and civic engagement tool, the ministry hopes to establish a digital foundation for smarter governance and urban transformation nationwide.
