MUSLIMS in Nigeria are set to begin the Ramadan fast following an official announcement by the Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto.
The announcement came after verified reports of the new moon sighting were received from the National Moon Sighting Committee and Islamic scholars across the country. The confirmation signals the beginning of Ramadan, one of the most significant periods in the Islamic faith.
According to a statement signed by Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council, Sokoto, fasting will commence on 18 February 2026.
Ramadan is marked by daily fasting from dawn to sunset, increased prayers and charitable acts. It is regarded as a time for spiritual renewal, self-discipline and deeper devotion to Allah.
In his message, the Sultan called on Muslims to dedicate the month to fervent prayers for peace, unity and national development. He also urged the faithful to uphold the values of compassion, generosity and harmonious coexistence.
He encouraged Nigerians to reflect on the teachings of Islam and to promote understanding and goodwill during the sacred month.
