Oborevwori Lights Up Hope As Niger Delta Unity Torch Arrives In Asaba
DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has charged athletes representing the state at the forthcoming Niger Delta Games to compete with determination, discipline and true sportsmanship.
The Governor gave the charge on Monday while receiving the Niger Delta Torch of Unity at Government House, Asaba. He was represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, Ph.D.
said the Niger Delta remains a peaceful region that continues to produce talented young people who excel nationally and internationally. He added that his administration is committed to building a future where youths are empowered to reach their full potential.
He urged the athletes to remember that they are not only competing for medals, but also representing the hopes and aspirations of the entire region.
According to him, the Torch of Unity is more than a ceremonial symbol. He described it as a sign of peace, unity and the shared commitment of the Niger Delta to use sports as a tool for sustainable development.
The Governor noted that the Niger Delta Games has grown into a credible platform for discovering and grooming young sporting talents, promoting healthy competition and strengthening brotherhood among states in the region.
With preparations ongoing for the second edition of the Games in Benin City, Edo State, he said sports continues to play a key role in engaging young people positively by promoting discipline, teamwork and excellence.
Oborevwori commended the organisers, Dunamis Icon Limited, for their consistency and dedication to regional development through sports. He also appreciated the support of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which is sponsoring the event.
He assured all stakeholders of the state government’s full support for the successful hosting of the Games and the realisation of its objectives.
Managing Director of Dunamis Icon Limited, Hon. Itiakpo Ikpokpo, said the Niger Delta Games was designed to identify promising talents and add value to youth development. He disclosed that more than 4,000 athletes are expected to participate in this year’s competition.
