Eight ‘Well-Dried’ Bodies Found In Akamkpa Mortuary, Suspect In Custody

THE Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the discovery of eight corpses at a local embalming facility in Isong Inyang Community along the Calabar–Ikom Highway, triggering an ongoing investigation and the arrest of a mortician.
Police spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday, revealing that operatives acted on credible intelligence received at about 11:56 a.m. on 13 February 2026.
Swift Police Response
According to the statement, officers were immediately deployed to the facility to verify the report. Upon arrival, they discovered eight “well-dried corpses” inside the embalmment hall of the premises.
The discovery raised questions about the documentation and circumstances surrounding the bodies, prompting law enforcement authorities to take swift action to secure the scene and begin preliminary inquiries.
One suspect, identified as Sunday Ben Reuben, was arrested at the facility. He is said to be a native of Nsit Ibom and was taken into custody for further questioning.
Suspect Linked to Mortuary Operations
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect works as a mortician with Enghaut Company Mortuary located in Akamkpa Local Government Area.
Police authorities have not disclosed the identities of the deceased persons or whether their presence at the facility was legally documented. However, officials confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine whether any laws were breached.
“The suspect is currently in custody, and a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the matter and to determine whether any laws have been contravened,” the statement read.
