Defence Minister Expresses Optimism As Nigeria Battles Insecurity

GOVERNMENT ASSURANCE AND NATIONAL SECURITY STRATEGY
Nigeria Gradually Winning the War on Insecurity — Gen. Musa
THE Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, has expressed optimism that Nigeria is making measurable progress in its fight against insecurity, assuring citizens that ongoing security efforts are yielding results and that a more peaceful future is attainable.
General Musa gave the assurance in Abuja at the weekend during the 7th edition of the OurNigeria News Awards, where he was honoured for leadership and national service alongside other distinguished Nigerians. The event brought together public officials, security experts, media executives and civil society actors.
Speaking shortly after receiving the award, the defence minister described the recognition as a morale booster, noting that acknowledgment from within the country carries special significance for those tasked with safeguarding national security.
“It is always inspiring to be recognised at home. It shows that Nigerians are watching and appreciating the sacrifices being made to secure the country,” Musa said.
Improving Security Situation
Responding to questions on the state of security nationwide, the minister said conditions are improving steadily, despite the complex nature of the threats confronting the country. He emphasised that peace cannot be achieved by government action alone, but through a collective national effort.
“We are improving by the day. We all need to put our hands together. Security is a whole-of-society responsibility, and we are heading in the right direction,” Musa stated.
He urged Nigerians not to lose hope, describing resilience and public cooperation as critical pillars in the fight against criminality and violent extremism.
Role of Leadership and International Engagements
Musa praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, noting that the administration has prioritised both domestic reforms and international partnerships.
According to him, Nigeria recently concluded high-level security engagements in Türkiye, where agreements were reached to enhance the country’s operational capacity, training and access to modern security technology.
“These engagements are deliberate and strategic. They are part of ongoing efforts to ensure our armed forces and security agencies are well equipped to confront evolving threats,” he said.
Nature of Nigeria’s Security Challenges
Explaining why insecurity has persisted despite sustained military operations, the defence minister described Nigeria’s situation as a form of asymmetric warfare, which differs significantly from conventional conflicts between states.
“In asymmetric warfare, the enemy is not easily identifiable. The threat often comes from within, making it more dangerous. Someone you trust could suddenly turn around and attack,” he explained.
He noted that this reality makes intelligence gathering, community vigilance and public cooperation indispensable to effective security operations.
Call for Citizen Vigilance
Musa warned that criminal groups often succeed because they receive support or shelter within communities, whether knowingly or unknowingly. He urged Nigerians to report suspicious activities promptly to security agencies.
“If you see any criminal activity—banditry, kidnapping, terrorism or insurgency—report it immediately. Action will be taken,” he said.
Insecurity as a Global Challenge
The minister also placed Nigeria’s experience within a global context, noting that insecurity is not unique to the country. According to him, many nations are grappling with similar threats, including terrorism and violent extremism.
“Nobody imagined that people would strap bombs to themselves to kill others, yet it is happening across Africa and the world,” he observed.
Optimism About Nigeria’s Future
Despite ongoing challenges, Musa expressed strong confidence in Nigeria’s future, describing the country as resilient and divinely blessed.
“Nigeria is a great country. United as Nigerians, nobody can push us aside. Together, we will overcome,” he said.
