Delta Begins 2026 Academic Term, Stresses Zero Tolerance For Truancy

THE Delta State Government has formally announced 5 January 2026 as the second-term resumption date for all public and private primary and secondary schools for the 2025/2026 academic year. The directive was issued in a statement jointly signed by Chief (Mrs.) Rose Ezewu and Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, who oversee secondary and primary education respectively.
Boarding Students to Return 4 January
All boarding pupils and students are to return on 4th January 2026, to ensure preparedness for immediate academic engagement on Monday.
Learning Starts Day One
The commissioners said teaching will commence immediately on 5 January, following supervised classroom cleaning by learners. Teachers were ordered to report promptly, while parents and guardians were urged to prepare children adequately for school resumption.
Monitoring Deployment and Teacher Accountability
Officials from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education will be stationed across the state to ensure compliance. The statement stressed zero tolerance for teacher absenteeism not approved by school heads, signalling a renewed enforcement drive to protect learning hours.
The commissioners extended New Year congratulations to principals, teachers, and learners, lauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his support, and expressed confidence that 2026 would advance the state’s education development goals.
