CAF Funding Shake-Up Brings Major Relief To NFF

By AUGUSTUS ISICHEI
THE Nigeria Football Federation will receive an annual allocation of $1 million, equivalent to about ₦1.5 billion, following sweeping reforms to senior national team competitions announced by the Confederation of African Football. The funding increase was confirmed by CAF President Patrice Motsepe as part of a broader restructuring plan designed to strengthen the financial base of African football.
Under the new framework, all 54 CAF member associations will receive a guaranteed $1 million annually, representing a fivefold increase from the previous allocation of $200,000. Motsepe said the funding is made possible by the restructuring of CAF competitions and the launch of a $1 billion commercial tender.
For the NFF, the guaranteed yearly funding is expected to ease longstanding financial pressures, support better budgeting and improve long-term planning for national teams across all categories. CAF said the funds will prioritise grassroots football, youth and women’s development, club competitions and regional tournaments, with further financial incentives to be announced after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
