CCB Targets Ministers, Senior Officials In Corruption Crackdown

By NJORIGE LYNUS
THE Code of Conduct Bureau is actively investigating corruption among former ministers, serving top officials, and senior public office holders, Chairman Dr. Abubakar Bello confirmed in Abuja. Some cases have progressed to court, while others remain under investigation. Bello explained that the bureau maintains confidentiality to prevent undue reputational harm before legal proceedings commence.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts are not limited to low-level offenders. Asset declaration remains a central tool, with the bureau examining unexplained wealth accumulated during tenure. Investigations are also launched based on credible petitions from the public and fellow civil servants.
Bello admitted that limited resources and reliance on manual systems require a risk-based approach, prioritizing high-impact cases. He added that the bureau’s planned online asset declaration system will significantly improve verification and enforcement, strengthening accountability among Nigeria’s political and administrative elite.
