Asaba Monarch Restores Founding Father’s True Name
By PAULINA NZERUBE
THE Asagba of Asaba, HRM Obi Prof. Azinge Chigbogu Epiphany, recently commissioned the re-erected statue of the town’s founding father, correcting a long-standing historical inaccuracy. During the ceremony, the monarch clarified that the progenitor’s name had been mistakenly recorded as Nnebisi, and confirmed the correct name as Kanebisi, reflecting the true origin of the title and honoring the town’s historical roots.
Speaking to a gathering of dignitaries, community leaders, and residents, the Asagba emphasized that this act of historical correction was more than symbolic; it serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Asaba. He highlighted that the people of Asaba are historically Igala, tracing their paternal lineage to Idah in Kogi State, while their maternal lineage originates from Nteje in Anambra State.
“This correction is important for posterity. True history unites communities, clarifies identities, and fosters pride among our people,” the monarch stated. He urged the younger generation to embrace their heritage and ensure the preservation of Asaba’s authentic historical narrative.
Dr. Ayegba, a historian and cultural commentator, praised the initiative, noting that “acknowledging and preserving true history strengthens communal bonds and corrects misconceptions that have long confused outsiders about Asaba’s ethnic and cultural identity.”
The event also drew congratulations from neighboring communities and the wider Anioma area, with many expressing appreciation for the commitment to historical accuracy and cultural preservation. Residents celebrated the correction as a milestone in recognizing Asaba’s unique identity within Delta State, distinguishing it from broader Igbo assumptions.
By formally restoring Kanebisi’s name, the Asagba reinforces Asaba’s legacy, asserting the town’s Igala roots while promoting unity and pride among its people. The ceremony marks a significant step in the ongoing effort to safeguard local history for future generations.
