2028 Table Tennis Showdown: Nigeria Wins Hosting Battle Against Tunisia

By FRED LONGJOHN OBEH
NIGERIA will host the 2028 ITTF Africa Championships after winning the right to stage the continental table tennis competition ahead of Tunisia.
The country secured 23 votes from 38 delegates at the ITTF Africa Annual General Meeting, giving it the mandate to organise the championship. Consequently, Nigeria emerged as the preferred destination for the tournament following the bidding contest.
The outcome offers a significant opportunity to showcase Nigerian table tennis to a wider African and international audience. It will also bring leading players from across the continent to Nigeria for one of the sport’s major regional events.
Beyond the competition itself, hosting the championship could help strengthen interest in table tennis at home. Furthermore, the event will give organisers an opportunity to demonstrate Nigeria’s capacity to manage a major international sporting tournament.
Nevertheless, securing the hosting rights does not by itself guarantee a successful event. Effective planning, suitable facilities, logistics and coordination with the relevant sporting authorities will be important as preparations move forward.
The organisers have yet to announce the venue and exact dates for the 2028 championships. Further information on the competition and its arrangements is expected in due course.
For now, Nigeria’s successful bid marks a key step towards bringing Africa’s table tennis community together on home soil. The next challenge will be to turn that achievement into a well-organised championship that benefits athletes, fans and the development of the sport.
