Why Nigeria Missed AFCON Bronze Presentation

THE Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has explained why the Super Eagles were absent from the bronze medal presentation ceremony at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Nigeria finished third at the tournament after edging Egypt 4–2 on penalties in the third-place playoff. Despite the victory, Super Eagles players were noticeably missing when medals were presented after the final match between Senegal and hosts Morocco, a situation that sparked questions and criticism among fans.
Addressing the issue, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau said the players were unable to stay behind for the ceremony due to pressure from their respective clubs, who demanded their immediate return after the playoff encounter.
Gusau made the clarification in remarks quoted by journalist Osasu Obayiuwana in a post on X on Monday. According to the NFF boss, the tight schedules of European clubs meant several Nigerian internationals had to leave Morocco shortly after Saturday’s third-place match.
“The players could not wait to receive their medals on Sunday. Their clubs were already after them to come back after Saturday’s game,” Gusau said.
He added that Nigeria was not alone in the situation, noting that Egypt also faced similar challenges with their players leaving early due to club commitments.
“I have the medals in my possession. And this is the case for Egypt too, not just us. Had the medal ceremony taken place on the day of the match, they would have had the medals,” Gusau stated.
The explanation sheds light on the logistical challenges national teams face during international tournaments, especially when competitions are held outside FIFA international windows. Several Super Eagles players returned to Europe immediately to resume league duties, contributing to their absence from the official ceremony.
