Warri, Asaba Named In Fresh Push For Delta State Restructuring

Akpabio Signals Support for Anioma State Creation
PRESIDENT of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has expressed support for the proposed creation of Anioma State, indicating that the National Assembly is favourably disposed to the demand from Delta North.
Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Zonal Congress in Asaba, Akpabio described the agitation as a legitimate aspiration that could advance regional development and political balance.
Proposed Capitals: Asaba and Warri
Providing clarity on the possible administrative structure, Akpabio said Asaba would serve as the capital of the proposed Anioma State, while Warri would become the capital of what he termed the “remaining Delta State.”
He argued that the restructuring would not diminish Delta State but could instead promote more inclusive development.
“The more states we have, the more development we attract,” he stated, adding that the proposal should not generate fear among stakeholders.
Political Symbolism and Support
Akpabio linked his appearance in traditional Anioma attire at the event to a symbolic show of solidarity, crediting Ned Nwoko for the gesture.
According to him, the attire underscored the growing political momentum behind the Anioma State movement.
Legislative Pathway and Regional Implications
The Senate President emphasised that the proposal must still pass through constitutional processes, including approvals by the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly.
He noted that if successful, the creation of Anioma State could strengthen governance structures and improve resource allocation in the South-South region.
Akpabio also called for unity among political stakeholders, urging continued support for national development initiatives while pursuing constitutional reforms.
