WAFCON 2026 In Doubt As CAF Delays Kick-Off

Report: CAF Pushes Back 2026 Women’s AFCON Amid Growing Uncertainty
THE 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has reportedly been postponed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), less than three weeks before its scheduled kick-off in Morocco.
The tournament, which was set to run from 17 March to 3rd April, was expected to mark a significant milestone for women’s football in Africa. Featuring an expanded 16-team format, the competition was widely seen as another step forward in the rapid growth of the women’s game across the continent.
However, reports indicate that the decision to postpone the tournament was taken during a meeting held on Friday 27 February. An official statement from CAF is anticipated in the coming days.
Mounting Speculation
Uncertainty surrounding the tournament’s fate had intensified in recent weeks. Questions were raised following remarks attributed to Nocawe Mafu, South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, while CAF itself remained publicly silent about the event’s status.
Sources suggest Moroccan authorities had cautioned that hosting the tournament in March would present logistical challenges. Despite those warnings, participating federations were reportedly left without formal communication from CAF, fueling confusion among teams and technical staff.
A social media reaction to the reported postponement described the timing as “absurd,” arguing that players and coaching crews had already entered final preparations. Several national teams had begun assembling provisional squads and intensifying training camps in anticipation of the continental showpiece.
Fresh Uncertainty
The delay introduces fresh uncertainty for players, broadcasters, sponsors and fans. With travel arrangements, accommodation logistics and commercial commitments already underway, the late shift is likely to disrupt planning cycles across the continent.
WAFCON has grown in stature in recent editions, drawing increased global attention and investment. The expansion to 16 teams was expected to broaden representation and enhance competitiveness.
For now, all eyes are on CAF as stakeholders await clarity on revised dates and the rationale behind the reported decision. Until an official announcement is made, the future of the 2026 edition remains in limbo.
