Veterinarian Raises Alarm Over Poultry & Goat Health In Bauchi

Livestock Health Under Threat During Harmattan
Veterinarian Warns of Increased Risk for Animals
BAUCHI-based veterinarian, Dr. Shehu Zailani, has cautioned that the cold and dry conditions characteristic of the harmattan season are placing livestock at heightened risk of disease and mortality. He revealed this in an interview on Tuesday in Bauchi.
Poultry Most Vulnerable
Dr. Zailani highlighted poultry, especially newly hatched chicks, as the most affected. “Fluctuating and extremely cold temperatures make temperature regulation difficult during brooding, leaving chicks vulnerable to respiratory infections,” he said. Symptoms may include coughing, nasal discharge, and laboured breathing, he explained.
Impact on Small Ruminants
Goats and sheep are also susceptible. Zailani noted that prolonged exposure to cold weakens immunity, making animals prone to infections such as respiratory diseases and Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR). Sneezing, nasal discharge, and general weakness are common indicators.
Preventive Measures
The veterinarian urged herders to provide warm, well-ventilated shelters, clean drinking water, and routine vaccination. “Cold-related diseases are highly contagious and can cause serious economic losses if not addressed early,” he warned.
