Valentine’s Day Run: Lagos Marathon Set For Coastal Showcase

By FRED LONGJOHN OBEH
THE 11th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon will break new ground on 14 February 2026, as runners take on sections of the Lagos-Calabar Highway for the first time in the race’s history.
Organisers confirmed that the Valentine’s Day event will retain its full 42-kilometre distance, starting at ORCA Mall in Victoria Island and finishing at Eko Atlantic City. The inclusion of the Lagos-Calabar Highway is expected to provide a scenic coastal stretch and elevate the profile of Nigeria’s premier road race.
The marathon, a World Athletics Gold Label event, continues to attract elite international athletes alongside thousands of recreational runners. More than 20,000 participants have registered for this year’s edition, reinforcing its status as one of Africa’s largest road races.
Officials say the route adjustment is designed to highlight ongoing coastal infrastructure development while offering runners a smoother and more visually engaging course. The Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversions and partial road closures along the route to ensure security and seamless organisation.
Since its inception, the Lagos City Marathon has grown into a flagship sporting event, boosting tourism, promoting fitness culture and placing Lagos firmly on the global road-running calendar.
With the race coinciding with Valentine’s Day, organisers are encouraging residents and visitors to combine celebration with sport—either by participating or cheering along the historic highway route.
