US Offers 10-Day Window To Iran As Trump Blends Diplomacy With Criticism

A Narrow Diplomatic Window Emerges
PRESIDENT Donald Trump has indicated a potential diplomatic opening with Iran, even as military tensions remain high following weeks of confrontation in the Middle East.
Speaking at the White House, Trump revealed that his administration has granted Tehran a 10-day window to explore de-escalation, extending a request initially made by Iranian officials for a shorter pause in hostilities.
According to the president, the extension was partly influenced by recent developments involving maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, where vessels previously seized by Iran were reportedly released.
Firm Position on Nuclear Programme
Despite the gesture, Trump maintained a hardline stance on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, reiterating that the United States would not tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran.
“You can’t allow a dangerous ideology to obtain nuclear weapons,” he said, stressing that military pressure remains central to preventing what he described as a potential nuclear breakout.
The administration continues to push for the complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities as a condition for any long-term agreement.
Backchannel Diplomacy and Mediation
The president confirmed that indirect communication channels remain open, with Pakistan reportedly acting as a mediator between Washington and Tehran.
These backchannel engagements come amid what officials describe as a “Maximum Pressure 2.0” strategy—combining economic sanctions, military deterrence, and selective diplomatic engagement.
Controversial Remarks on Iranian Leadership
During the briefing, Trump also addressed questions related to Iran’s internal leadership dynamics, including speculation surrounding Mojtaba Khamenei, a prominent figure within the country’s political structure.
While declining to confirm intelligence details, the president made remarks suggesting that certain personal allegations, if true, could have political implications within Iran’s conservative system.
Criticism of Western Activism
The president further used the platform to criticise pro-Palestinian advocacy groups in the West, particularly those identifying with LGBTQ+ causes.
He questioned what he described as contradictions between advocacy positions and the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals in parts of the Middle East, framing it as a broader critique of Western protest movements.
Balancing Pressure and Diplomacy
While the 10-day window signals a possible shift toward dialogue, analysts note that significant gaps remain between the positions of both countries.
For now, the United States appears to be pursuing a dual-track approach—maintaining military and economic pressure while leaving the door open for negotiations.
