THE Nigerian Army has announced another major success in its counter-insurgency campaign after troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) foiled a late-night terrorist attack in Gamboru Ngala, Borno State, killing 10 insurgents and recovering a large cache of weapons and equipment.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the spokesperson of OPHK, Colonel Sani Uba, said the troops engaged the terrorists during a fierce gun battle along the Gamboru-Dikwa-Marte axis, one of the flashpoints of Boko Haram and ISWAP activity in the North-East.
The clash, according to Uba, occurred around 11:50 p.m. on 25 October, when soldiers on ambush duty spotted the insurgents advancing toward Gamboru from the Flatari area. The troops immediately opened fire, forcing the attackers to retreat toward Dikwa after sustaining heavy casualties.
“The unit delivered heavy and accurate suppressive fire, forcing the insurgents to retreat in disarray,” Uba said. “At first light, the troops conducted a clearance operation, confirming 10 terrorists neutralised.”
A subsequent sweep of the area led to the recovery of several weapons, including:
-
Five AK-47 rifles
-
One PKT machine gun
-
Three locally-made guns
-
Two fabricated pistols
-
Five AK-47 magazines loaded with 7.62mm rounds
-
Boxes of 7.62 x 54mm linked ammunition
-
Two motorcycles and bicycles
-
A radio communication set
-
A dane gun barrel, water flask, blanket, raincoat, and charms.
Colonel Uba added that the Military High Command had commended the troops for their “gallantry, vigilance, and tactical proficiency,” noting that the successful ambush demonstrates the increasing effectiveness of ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the North-East.
The statement also reaffirmed OPHK’s commitment to sustaining offensive actions, protecting civilians, and restoring peace to communities long affected by insurgency.
This latest victory comes just days after another major confrontation at Katarko, Yobe State, where troops reportedly killed over 50 terrorists in a separate battle.
However, the insurgent faction ISWAP has continued to mount sporadic attacks, recently claiming responsibility for assaults on military positions while showcasing captured items in propaganda videos. The group has also been accused of deploying armed drones, a worrying development that Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum said highlights the urgent need to strengthen Nigeria’s airspace security.
Despite these threats, the Army maintains that its relentless counter-offensives are steadily degrading the capabilities of insurgent groups and restoring confidence among communities in the region.
