Tension In Akwa Ibom As Governor Guarantees Return For Incumbents

Consensus Politics Meets Grassroots Resistance
Automatic Return Plan Reshapes Akwa Ibom’s 2027 Race
GOVERNOR Umo Eno has altered Akwa Ibom’s political landscape by abandoning the zoning system and endorsing automatic return tickets for all incumbent elected officials ahead of the 2027 elections.
The policy shift is linked to a broader political understanding designed to reward loyalty and stabilise alliances following recent party realignments.
Rising Opposition Across Constituencies
The decision has triggered strong reactions from grassroots leaders and political stakeholders, many of whom view zoning as essential to equitable representation.
In multiple constituencies, including Ikot Abasi and Eket Senatorial District, local groups have rejected attempts by incumbents to extend their tenure, insisting on adherence to rotational arrangements.
In Abak State Constituency, opposition has also intensified against a proposed third-term bid, with critics citing concerns over performance and inclusiveness.
Firm Stance from Government
Despite the growing dissent, Governor Eno has reiterated his commitment to the agreement underpinning the arrangement.
He cautioned that no elective offices would be available for contest, effectively shutting the door on new aspirants.
“We know the agreements we had, and we will honour them,” he said, emphasising that the political direction of the state has shifted.
Implications for Party Unity
Analysts suggest the move could deepen divisions within political ranks, especially in areas where zoning has historically guided power distribution.
As agitation grows, the unfolding situation is likely to shape the dynamics of Akwa Ibom’s political contest ahead of 2027.
