Tension In Abuja As #FreeNnamdiKanu Protesters Defy Security Warnings
By SANI BATURE
ABUJA witnessed chaos on Monday as #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protesters defied security warnings, paralyzing movement and business across the city. Organized by activist Omoyele Sowore, the demonstrators demanded the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, who remains in DSS custody since 2021.
Security forces responded with teargas, arresting Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, and several others. The clashes began near Unity Fountain and spread to Utako and Jabi, where police and soldiers dispersed protesters and journalists alike. AFP reporter John Okunyomih was detained and had his camera damaged, drawing condemnation from the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
The city’s major routes, including Shehu Shagari Way and the Abuja–Keffi Highway, were blocked as police set up checkpoints, leading to severe gridlock. Many commuters were stranded, and businesses near the Federal Secretariat and the Three Arms Zone shut down amid tension.
The presidency criticised Ejimakor’s participation, with presidential aide Bayo Onanuga calling it “unethical” given Kanu’s ongoing treason trial. Despite the crackdown, protesters regrouped in parts of the city, vowing to continue their agitation until Kanu’s release.
The unrest underscores Nigeria’s growing civil discontent and raises questions about the government’s approach to managing dissent and political expression.
