Spotify’s EQUAL Africa Empowers Women At Greasy Tunes Café

By BUNMI BUSOLA
SPOTIFY’S EQUAL Africa initiative is amplifying the voices of women in music across the continent, with its impact taking centre stage at the Greasy Tunes Café pop-up event in Lagos.
According to Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, the initiative continues to give female artists a global platform to share their creativity and influence music culture. She noted that performances by Moliy, Joyce Olong, Lady Donli, and Goodgirl LA are helping reshape the African music narrative by highlighting diverse female perspectives.
The three-week Greasy Tunes Café celebration brings together Nigerian food, music, and culture, drawing creatives and fans alike. Week two of the event featured energetic performances from stars like Odumodublvck, The Cavemen, and Sarz, reflecting Nigeria’s vibrant street-inspired sound and its growing influence among young audiences.
In addition to performances, the event hosted panel discussions and screenings, including the Loose Talk Podcast Live and Ki’mon! The Eastern Nigerian Afro-Funk Revolution. These sessions explored the roots of hip-hop in Nigeria and the lasting influence of Afro-funk on today’s Afrobeats movement.
Okumu emphasized that such experiences not only connect audiences with contemporary female artistry but also celebrate Nigeria’s evolving musical identity.
“Through EQUAL Africa, we are ensuring that women are seen, heard, and celebrated in the global music conversation,” she said.
