Spotify’s EQUAL Africa Empowers Women At Greasy Tunes Café
By BUNMI BUSOLA
SPOTIFY’S EQUAL Africa initiative is giving women in music a global platform, highlighted during the Greasy Tunes Café pop-up in Lagos. Phiona Okumu, Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa at Spotify, said performances by ambassadors Moliy, Joyce Olong, Lady Donli, and Goodgirl LA are reshaping African music narratives.
The three-week café celebrates Nigerian food, music, and culture, with week two headlined by Odumodublavk, The Cavemen, and Sarz, showcasing the street-influenced sounds popular with youth. Panels and screenings, including the Loose Talk Podcast Live and Ki’mon! The Eastern Nigerian Afro-Funk Revolution, highlighted hip-hop’s roots and afro-funk’s historical influence on modern Afrobeats.
Okumu emphasized that these experiences connect audiences with contemporary female artistry and celebrate Nigeria’s evolving musical heritage.
