Soludo Convenes Emergency Meeting Over Onitsha Market Shutdown
ANAMBRA State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, is set to hold a crucial meeting with market executives across the state following the recent closure of the Onitsha Main Market by the state government.
The market was shut after traders reportedly complied with a sit-at-home order on Monday, despite the directive having been proscribed by the state authorities. The development prompted swift government action, leading to the temporary closure of the commercial hub.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Trade and Market, Chief Evarist Uba, said the meeting is scheduled to hold on Thursday 29 January, at the International Conference Centre in Awka, the state capital. The meeting is expected to begin at 11:00 a.m.
According to the statement, the meeting will bring together all market chairmen and secretaries, zonal chairmen and secretaries, as well as line chairmen and secretaries operating within the state’s markets.
Chief Uba described the meeting as one of “urgent importance,” noting that it would address critical issues affecting market operations, security, and compliance with state policies.
He further disclosed that accreditation would be conducted for all invited participants and urged them to be seated by 11:30 a.m. prompt.
Although details of the agenda were not disclosed, the meeting is expected to focus on restoring order, reinforcing government directives, and preventing future disruptions to economic activities in the state.
The Onitsha Main Market is one of the largest commercial centres in West Africa and plays a significant role in the economic life of Anambra State.
