Hospital Breaks Silence on Snakebite Incident
THE Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has denied allegations of negligence following the death of Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, whose passing has generated widespread reactions on social media.
In a statement issued by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Bioku Muftau, the hospital clarified that it provided appropriate and timely medical care to the patient and described reports suggesting otherwise as unfounded.
Details of Medical Intervention
The statement explained that the deceased was admitted to FMC Abuja after suffering a snakebite that resulted in serious neurotoxic effects. Medical staff, according to the hospital, immediately commenced emergency management upon her arrival.
Interventions carried out included resuscitation, intravenous fluid therapy, oxygen administration via intranasal delivery, and the prompt use of polyvalent anti-snake venom in line with standard emergency treatment guidelines.
Rebuttal of Anti-Venom Shortage Claims
FMC Abuja categorically rejected claims that the lack of anti-snake venom contributed to the death, maintaining that the necessary medication was available and administered during treatment.
The hospital noted that snakebite complications can progress rapidly and unpredictably, even with early and appropriate clinical care.
Expression of Sympathy
The management conveyed its condolences to the family of the deceased, describing her death as a painful and unfortunate incident.
FMC Abuja reiterated its confidence in the skills and professionalism of its healthcare workers and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care and clinical responsibility.
