Slow Start For Enugu International Trade Fair Amid Rising Costs
Low-Key Opening at Trade Fair Complex
THE 37th Enugu International Trade Fair commenced on Saturday on a subdued note, with most exhibitors yet to fully set up their stands at the International Trade Fair Complex.
Observations at the venue showed that activities were minimal on opening day, as many regular participants were still constructing their exhibition spaces. Notably, the newly inaugurated 3,000-square-metre tent remained largely unoccupied, with no stands erected inside it at the time of inspection.
Exhibitors Still Preparing
Despite the official commencement, several exhibitors were seen working on their structures, suggesting that full commercial activity may take a few days to gain momentum.
Organisers, however, downplayed concerns over the slow start. The Director General of the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA), Uche Mba, described the situation as typical of previous editions.
“Over the years, the first day often appears quiet, but activities usually pick up as the fair progresses,” he said.
Economic Pressures Affect Turnout
The fair is also opening against the backdrop of rising transportation costs, with fares reportedly increasing by about 20 per cent. The hike, linked to rising petrol prices driven by global energy tensions, may discourage early attendance by visitors.
The trade fair is scheduled to run from 21 to 30 March, with expectations that participation and patronage will improve in the coming days.
