THE Senate has launched an investigation into rising safety lapses in Nigeria’s aviation sector following a runway overrun by an Air Peace aircraft at the Port Harcourt International Airport.
The motion, sponsored by Senator Abdulfatai Buhari (Oyo North), led to a directive for the Committee on Aviation to consult stakeholders—including the NSIB, NCAA, FAAN, and airline operators—and present findings within six weeks.
Lawmakers expressed alarm over safety risks revealed in the NSIB report on the 22 June 2025 incident, which cited poor runway conditions, inadequate lighting, and weak regulatory oversight.
The Senate also urged the Federal Government to build a second runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to enhance safety and reduce operational delays.
