Senate Clears Three Ambassadorial Nominees After Tough Security-Focused Screening

THE Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs on Wednesday subjected three ambassadorial nominees to an intense screening before clearing them for appointment. Those approved are former NIA Director-General Ayo Oke, career diplomat Amin Muhammad Dalhatu, and former DSS Director-General Lateef Kayode Are.
Oke’s appearance drew the most attention as he addressed long-standing controversies from his tenure at the NIA. He defended his record, claiming significant institutional progress between 2013 and 2017 and stressing that a disputed covert operation was authorised by two former Presidents. He also spoke emotionally about the personal toll the allegations took on his family.
Committee members acknowledged the sensitivity of the issues raised and praised the nominees’ experience in intelligence, diplomacy, and public service. Chairman Senator Sani Bello reminded them to secure endorsements from their home-state senators, a requirement for confirmation.
The panel ultimately described the nominees as competent and well-prepared for diplomatic service and recommended their confirmation by the full Senate.
