Ramadan Row Trails INEC’s 2027 Election Schedule

ADC Welcomes Early Timetable
THE African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have expressed divergent views over the 2027 general election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC welcomed INEC’s decision to fix 20 February 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections.
The party described the early release of the timetable as a positive step that would provide political parties, stakeholders and voters with clarity for preparation ahead of the polls. According to the ADC, timely scheduling strengthens democratic planning and enhances transparency in the electoral process.
Atiku Raises Ramadan Concern
However, hours after the party’s endorsement, Atiku issued a separate statement rejecting the date, noting that it falls within the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, scheduled for 7 February to 8 March 2027.
He urged INEC to reconsider the timing, arguing that conducting elections during Ramadan could affect participation among Muslim voters observing fasting and prayers.
Atiku said elections require maximum participation and national focus, stressing that fixing such a significant civic exercise during a major religious observance shows a lack of sensitivity to Nigeria’s socio-religious diversity.
He further questioned the preparedness of the electoral body, stating that in a country as diverse as Nigeria, inclusive planning is essential to ensuring credible elections.
The differing positions have sparked debate within political circles, as stakeholders weigh the implications of the proposed date ahead of the 2027 polls.
