Publication Surfaces On Tinubu’s Distrust In One Nigeria REPORT EXCLUSIVE TO NEWS CRACKERS
A past newspaper interview, in which Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, supposedly turned himself into a ‘basket mouth’, has been dusted up, concerning some unpatriotic comments he made about the unity of the country.
In This Day Newspaper publication of April 23, 1997, two years before he successfully aspired to the governorship of Lagos State, Tinubu got ample space on Page 9 of This Day, saying that, “I don’t believe in One Nigeria”. But in a matter of years, he virtually turned Lagos and most parts of the South West into a personal political empire, a possession seen by pundits as his trump card, in the emergence of a flag bearer in his party- the APC, as it could boil down to a show of strength, following the North’s reported position against power shift to the South in 2023.
Hence, if the comment is found to be true, Tinubu’s vituperation could be a costly disaster for him and a deconstruction of his hitherto avowed stance and political mantra, about one, indivisible and progressive Nigeria. It contradicts the judgement of the ruling party, which has virtually thrown every military might to whip so-called secessionists into line.
Although 1997 was still a frustrating moment for the pro democracy movement, to which Tinubu belonged, it is still not clear if he reacted out of frustration, or if such an unpatriotic comment, is truly his nature.
