Police Nab Four Kidnap Suspects In Anambra, Recover Firearms
THE Anambra State Police Command has apprehended four suspected kidnappers and recovered a cache of arms and ammunition during a special operation in Amansea, Awka North Local Government Area.
Police Spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed in a statement that the suspects were arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, in the early hours of September 1, 2025.
According to him, the operation followed credible intelligence linked to a kidnapping case in which abductors collected a ₦5 million ransom before releasing their victims. The case, first reported at B Division, Awka, was later transferred to the Rapid Response Squad on August 14, 2025.
The suspects were identified as Chigozie Igboekwu (31), Odumegwu Chibuike (23), Jonah Awudu (40), and Okechukwu Nwari (33). Police also recovered two pump-action rifles and nine live cartridges from them.
Ikenga revealed that the suspects confessed to kidnapping two individuals in Amansea on August 12, 2025, around 7:00 p.m. The victims were reportedly held for two days in a forest at Ugwuoba, Enugu State, before being freed after ransom payment.
Commending the operatives for their swift action, Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, assured residents that the Command remains committed to dismantling criminal networks and ensuring the safety of all communities in Anambra.
Ikenga added that the case will be charged to court after investigations are concluded, while efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the gang still at large.
