Police Bust Trafficking Ring, Rescue Seven Victims In Akwa Ibom
Anti-Trafficking Operation Yields Arrests
SECURITY operatives in Akwa Ibom State have disrupted a suspected human trafficking operation, rescuing seven victims and apprehending four suspects linked to the crime.
The operation was carried out by the Nigeria Police Force following intelligence reports that young persons were being transported through the state under suspicious circumstances.
Police spokesperson Timfon John disclosed the details in a statement issued to journalists in Uyo on Saturday.
Highway Interception
The breakthrough occurred during a stop-and-search operation along the Ikot Ekpene–Aba Road, a major transit route linking several parts of southern Nigeria.
Police officers intercepted a vehicle suspected of carrying trafficking victims at about 8 a.m. on Friday.
Four victims were rescued during the initial operation, while the suspect driving the vehicle was arrested and taken into custody for questioning.
According to the police, the operation was initiated after authorities received credible intelligence about the movement of young persons believed to be victims of trafficking.
Follow-Up Raids Expand Investigation
Information obtained from the arrested suspect led officers to expand the investigation to other locations within the state.
Subsequent operations in Itam and Ibaka within Oron Local Government Area resulted in the rescue of three additional victims and the arrest of three more suspects.
With these arrests, the number of victims rescued in the operation rose to seven, while four suspects are currently in police custody.
Suspected Cross-Border Trafficking Activities
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects may belong to a trafficking syndicate that specialises in recruiting and transporting young people across national borders for exploitation.
Police sources revealed that one suspected leader of the network had previously escaped through waterways from Ibaka to neighbouring countries such as Cameroon and Gabon with some victims.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and uncover the full scope of the trafficking network.
Police Seek Public Cooperation
The Akwa Ibom Police Command emphasised that investigations are still in progress and that those arrested will face prosecution once the inquiry is completed.
The command also urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
Officials stressed that community cooperation is critical in preventing human trafficking and protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
