THE Asagba of Asaba, HRM Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, SAN, OON, on Thursday, 6 February 2026, received former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, and his entourage at the Asagba’s Palace in Asaba.
The visit, described as cordial and symbolic, highlighted long-standing personal ties and mutual respect between the monarch and the former governor.
Celebrating a Long-Standing Relationship
Speaking during the audience, HRM Asagba Azinge revealed that Mr. Obi has been a close family friend and brother for over three decades. Popularly known as Nna Agu, the monarch expressed deep appreciation to Obi—fondly referred to as Okwute Igbo—for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit the palace.
“All we can say is that you are a good man,” the Asagba said. “If given the opportunity, we can also say without equivocation that you will offer good leadership at any point in time.”
The monarch described the visit as a mark of enduring friendship and fidelity, adding that it was a great honour not only to the palace but to the entire Asaba people.
Peter Obi Pays Respect to Traditional Institution
In his response, Mr. Peter Obi thanked the Asagba for the warm reception accorded him and his delegation. He explained that the visit was purely a courtesy call to show respect and appreciation for the revered traditional ruler.
Obi described the Asagba as an outstanding elder statesman who continues to work tirelessly for the progress and unity of the Asaba community.
He stressed the need for sustained support for traditional institutions, noting that monarchs play a critical role in promoting peace, development and cultural values at the grassroots level.
