Ozoro Festival: Delta Orders Police To Hunt Down Rape Suspects

Government Condemns Festival Violence
THE Delta State Government has directed the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to urgently track down those responsible for the harassment and alleged rape of women during the recent Ozoro Festival in Isoko North Local Government Area.
The directive follows widespread reports of abuse during the cultural event, which have sparked outrage across the state and beyond.
‘No Culture Above the Law’
Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, described the incident as “barbaric and unacceptable,” stressing that cultural celebrations must never be used as a cover for criminal acts.
“The Delta State Government strongly condemns the harassment of ladies and the reported cases of rape during the Ozoro Festival. Such barbaric acts are totally unacceptable and have no place in our society,” he said.
Call for Swift Investigation
Aniagwu urged security agencies to launch an immediate investigation into the incident, ensuring that all perpetrators are identified, apprehended, and prosecuted in line with the law.
The government’s directive signals a firm stance against gender-based violence and a determination to enforce accountability.
Protecting Citizens and Restoring Trust
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and rights, the government assured residents—particularly women and vulnerable groups—of increased protection measures.
Officials emphasised that public safety remains a top priority, especially during large gatherings and cultural events.
Preventing Future Occurrences
The government also called on community leaders and festival organisers to strengthen security arrangements at such events to prevent a recurrence.
It reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on gender-based violence, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
