Outrage As Unwanted Pregnancies, Abortions Rock Benue IDP Camp

REPORTS of rising cases of unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions have sparked concern at the Makurdi Ultra Modern International Market, now home to thousands of displaced persons from Yelewata in Benue State.
Health workers say several aborted foetuses were recently found at the camp’s refuse site, exposing the growing crisis of unprotected sex and lack of reproductive health awareness among residents. A volunteer disclosed that a man outside the camp allegedly performs crude abortions for some girls, often resulting in complications.
The camp, housing over 5,000 people with limited privacy and poor access to health education, has become a hotspot for risky sexual behaviour. “Beyond food and shelter, these people need regular health education and access to protection,” a medical volunteer warned, citing risks of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
Benue Commissioner for Women Affairs, Theresa Ikwue, described the situation as disturbing and pledged intensified awareness and support for adolescent girls. The Red Cross also confirmed a growing number of abortion-related cases, many linked to unqualified practitioners.
Authorities say steps are being taken to strengthen reproductive health education and prevent further tragedies among the displaced population.
