Olojo Festival 5km Race Debuts In Ile-Ife With Global Ambition

THE historic city of Ile-Ife is set to witness a new cultural-sporting fusion as the inaugural Olojo Festival 5km Road Race kicks off this week, promising a world-class experience.
Held alongside the iconic Olojo Festival — which celebrates Ogun, the god of iron, and the mythical first dawn of creation — the race marks the first time the Athletics Federation of Nigeria has sanctioned a road race tied to a major cultural celebration.
The event is organised by Sooko Adeleke Odewade, in collaboration with the Alade’fa Athletic Family Initiative, and endorsed by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.
Race Director Tony Osheku, a veteran coach, said the 5km distance was chosen to make the race inclusive:
“It’s open to elite runners, youths, and amateurs. We want everyone to participate, enjoy the thrill, and share in the festival spirit.”
Beyond competition, organisers say the race will empower young people, promote healthy living, and boost local businesses by drawing in tourists and sponsors.
Sooko Odewade described it as the start of a bigger vision:
“This race will uncover raw talent, but it won’t end there. We’re building a system of coaching, mentorship, and long-term support.”
Winners will receive cash prizes, while all participants will be awarded certificates. Organisers insist this is more than a race — it’s a movement linking sport, culture, and community growth.
