GOVERNOR Sheriff Oborevwori has appealed for calm after Asaba indigenes staged a peaceful protest over circulating rumours that the proposed Anioma State capital might be moved elsewhere. The demonstrators marched to Government House, Asaba, demanding clarity on the matter.
Addressing them on behalf of the Governor, Chief of Staff Hon. Johnson Erijo commended the protesters for their orderly conduct, describing the rally as a reflection of Asaba’s unity and civic responsibility. He assured the crowd that the state government values their concerns and remains committed to transparency.
Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the creation of Anioma State — including the determination of its capital — must follow constitutional procedures, legislative debate, and the collective will of the people. He noted that no individual or political group has the power to unilaterally impose a decision on the capital’s location, adding that any final step could involve broad consultations and even a referendum.
Responding, community spokesperson Mr. Chike Ifesiokwu expressed appreciation for the government’s prompt engagement. He reaffirmed Asaba’s commitment to peaceful dialogue and urged continued communication to prevent misinformation and tension.
