Oborevwori, Service Commanders, Others Honour Nigeria’s Fallen Heroes …As 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration Ends In Delta
DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Thursday led top government officials, service commanders and veterans in a solemn tribute to Nigeria’s fallen heroes as activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day came to a close in Asaba.
The ceremony, held at the Cenotaph, featured wreath-laying, military rituals, and interfaith prayers for officers who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation.
Governor Oborevwori, accompanied by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, arrived the venue to a traditional military salute before inspecting the guard of honour mounted by personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Nigerian Legion — a display that underscored discipline, patriotism and national unity.
Also present were the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor; Chief Judge of the state, Justice Tessy Diai; Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu; security chiefs; and the Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Maj-Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd.), the Orodje of Okpe.
The event began with a minute of silence in memory of the fallen heroes, followed by interfaith prayers offered by Christian and Muslim clerics for the repose of the departed, the well-being of their families, and divine protection for Nigeria.
Governor Oborevwori later led the Service Commanders, Commissioner of Police, representatives of traditional rulers, legionnaires, and senior government functionaries in the symbolic laying of wreaths at the tomb of the unknown soldier.
A highlight of the ceremony was the firing of volleys and the release of white pigeons by the Governor, signifying peace, hope and renewal, and reaffirming Delta State’s commitment to the ideals of unity and sacrifice upheld by Nigeria’s military heroes.
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day remains a national moment of reflection, honouring the bravery of soldiers who fought to safeguard the country, while reminding citizens of the collective duty to preserve peace and national cohesion.
It will be recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on December 2, 2025, launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal Fund in honour of Nigeria’s fallen heroes, wounded veterans, and serving troops across various frontlines.
