Oborevwori Praises Midwestern Oil’s $2 Million Scholarship Investment

Governor Highlights Power of Education
DELTA State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has described education as one of the most powerful instruments for societal transformation, urging sustained collaboration between government and the private sector to secure the future of the state.
The governor made the remarks on Thursday at Government House, Asaba, while receiving the Managing Director of Midwestern Oil and Gas Company Limited, Mrs. Elozino Olaniyi, and her management team on a courtesy visit.
Oborevwori commended the company’s consistent investments in education, youth empowerment, technical capacity development and community support, describing its scholarship programmes as impactful and forward-looking.
“Investing in students today secures the future of our state tomorrow,” the governor said, noting that growth in the energy sector must be matched by tangible social responsibility initiatives.
Safety, Responsibility and Industry Standards
Beyond education, the governor praised the company’s safety and environmental record, highlighting its achievement of over seven million man-hours without a Lost Time Injury. He described the milestone as evidence of discipline and professionalism in a sector where safety standards are critical.
“In an industry as sensitive as oil and gas, environmental responsibility and transparency are not optional — they are essential,” he said.
Oborevwori assured the delegation that his administration remains committed to creating an enabling environment where responsible businesses can thrive. He pledged continued support for policies that promote local content participation, community inclusion and sustainable development.
Strengthening Public-Private Partnerships
The governor stressed that collaboration between government and the private sector is central to maintaining peace, economic stability and long-term growth in Delta State.
He encouraged Midwestern Oil and Gas to expand its engagement with host communities, particularly in renewable energy development, infrastructure projects and youth employment initiatives. According to him, strategic partnerships built on accountability and innovation are vital to advancing the collective interest of the people.
Oborevwori also commended Mrs. Olaniyi’s leadership in the technical oil and gas sector, describing her visit as a reaffirmation of shared development goals.
Company Reaffirms Commitment
In her remarks, Olaniyi said the company views oil and gas operations as extending beyond profit-making.
“For us, oil and gas is not only about money. It is about values. It is about non-financial impact,” she said.
She disclosed that the company has intensified its focus on education and capacity building since she assumed office, awarding scholarships this year to 298 students nationwide, with over $2 million invested.
The scholarships cover both secondary and tertiary education, including beneficiaries from Delta State and other host communities, with some students currently studying in the United States and Latvia.
