Oborevwori Launches Power Initiative To Drive Delta Industrialisation

A Bold Push for Reliable Electricity
THE Delta State Government has unveiled the “Light Up To Industrialise Delta Initiative,” a comprehensive strategy aimed at tackling persistent electricity challenges and driving economic transformation.
At a press briefing in Asaba, Commissioner for Economic Planning, Sunny Ekedayen, said the initiative reflects the vision of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to reposition the state as an industrial hub powered by stable electricity.
Strategic Assessment and Policy Reforms
Ekedayen disclosed that the government has engaged Power Acumen Consulting Ltd to conduct a detailed diagnostic review of the state’s electricity ecosystem.
According to him, the consultants have carried out extensive fieldwork, identifying major gaps across infrastructure and policy frameworks. An interim report has already recommended sweeping reforms, including a review of electricity laws and the creation of a State Electricity Commission.
“A detailed roadmap will soon be delivered,” he said, assuring residents that tangible improvements are expected in the near future.
Focus on Distribution, Not Generation
Providing further insight, Commissioner for Energy, Michael Anoka, explained that the initiative prioritises efficient transmission and distribution rather than generation.
He noted that Delta already has significant unused power capacity from sources such as Okpai and Ughelli. The government’s goal is to harness and distribute this energy effectively.
“Our target is to achieve 24-hour power supply in Asaba and Warri within 12 months,” Anoka said, adding that the project will later be expanded across the state.
Building an Independent Power Grid
The state is also working with Benin Electricity Distribution Company and technical partners to strengthen distribution networks.
Plans are underway to develop an independent electricity grid that will integrate multiple power sources, including Transcorp Ughelli and Sapele, ensuring reliability and efficiency.
Funding and Technical Backing Assured
Commissioner for Finance, Fidelis Tilije, assured that funding will not be a constraint, emphasizing the government’s commitment to fully support the initiative.
Similarly, Managing Director of Infrastructure Bank Plc, Erhabor Okogun, affirmed that Delta has the financial strength to drive large-scale infrastructure development.
Power as Catalyst for Growth
Energy expert Matthew Edevbie described electricity as the “lifeblood” of industrialisation, stressing that reliable power is essential for economic growth, job creation, and investment.
He commended the government’s holistic approach, assuring that the project will be carefully implemented to deliver long-term benefits.
A Vision for Transformation
With strong policy direction, technical expertise, and financial backing, the initiative is expected to position Delta State as a model for power-driven industrialisation in Nigeria.
