Oborevwori Inaugurates Key Infrastructure At Southern Delta University
DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Saturday commissioned multiple landmark projects at Southern Delta University, Ozoro, as the institution held its maiden convocation ceremony.
The newly inaugurated facilities include a block of science laboratories, the Faculty of Computing Complex, the Pa James Odhokpa Izomor Engineering Workshops — comprising 10 fully equipped workshops donated by Engineer Godwin Izomor — male and female hostels, and a new Faculty of Medical Sciences building delivered by the state government.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Oborevwori expressed gratitude to God and praised the university for its steady growth within just a few years.
“I am very pleased to be here today. First and foremost, I thank Almighty God for making this occasion possible, and I commend Southern Delta University for this remarkable milestone,” he said.
The Governor noted that he began the day’s activities before 9 a.m. by commissioning critical academic facilities, including laboratories for the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and the Computing Complex.
He described the engineering workshops built in memory of Pa James Izomor as a shining example of meaningful private-sector investment in education.
“While many people invest their wealth in luxury and showmanship, this family chose to invest in education. This is deeply commendable, and I pray that God will continue to bless them,” he added.
Oborevwori also commended Vice-Chancellor Professor Jacob Oboreh and the University’s Governing Council for their prudent management of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), saying the institution’s transparent financial practices had translated directly into visible development.
“I am particularly impressed with the prudent use of Internally Generated Revenue by the University management. I encourage Vice-Chancellors of other universities to emulate what is being done here,” he said.
Reflecting on the new Faculty of Medical Sciences, the Governor recalled inspecting the foundation last year and promising to deliver a world-class structure.
“Today, I am glad to say that this promise has been fulfilled. The quality of work delivered here speaks volumes. This is a significant project and reflects the steady expansion and growth of the university. This is a promise made and a promise kept,” he said.
In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Professor Oboreh disclosed that many of the completed projects were funded through IGR and executed via direct labour, ensuring cost-effectiveness and strict quality control. He thanked the Governor for his continuous funding support, saying it had enabled the young institution to record impressive infrastructural and academic progress.
The inauguration of the projects formed a major highlight of Southern Delta University’s first-ever convocation, reinforcing the state government’s commitment to strengthening tertiary education and expanding access to modern learning facilities across Delta State.
