Oborevwori Hails Nigerian Navy For Protecting Maritime Assets, Boosting Delta’s Security
DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has applauded the Nigerian Navy for its vital role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime environment and protecting key oil and gas facilities. He described the Navy as indispensable to Nigeria’s security and economic stability.
The Governor gave the commendation on Monday in Asaba when he received the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, who visited Government House as part of his operational tour of naval formations in Delta State.
Welcoming the Naval Chief and his team, Governor Oborevwori said the visit reflected the Navy’s commitment to supporting peace and security across the Niger Delta, especially in Delta, one of Nigeria’s top oil-producing states.
“Delta is one of the highest oil-producing states and a major contributor to the nation. The Nigerian Navy has played a major role in securing our maritime environment and protecting national assets,” he said.
He praised the Navy’s anti-piracy operations, peacekeeping duties, and the strong collaboration its personnel maintain with other security agencies in the state. According to the Governor, this synergy has helped sustain the peaceful atmosphere that allows major companies such as Julius Berger and CCECC to operate freely.
Governor Oborevwori explained that the relative peace enjoyed in Delta has made it possible for his administration to push ahead with major infrastructure projects, including flyovers and major highways like the Ughelli–Asaba expressway.
He assured Vice Admiral Abbas that the state government would continue to work closely with the Navy to ensure the safety of oil installations and coastal communities.
“Our oil assets are secured because of the smooth working relationship among all security agencies. When there is trouble in Delta, the whole country feels it. We appreciate your commitment,” he said.
Earlier, Vice Admiral Abbas said his visit was to assess the readiness of naval units in Delta, identify challenges, and strengthen security operations around oil and gas infrastructure.
He noted that Delta State hosts a large concentration of Nigeria’s critical energy assets, making effective surveillance and protection a national priority.
“The purpose of my visit is to get first-hand information on what is happening in our formations. Delta is key to the nation’s oil and gas sector, and the need to protect these facilities cannot be overstated,” he said.
He thanked Governor Oborevwori for his continued support to the Navy, revealing that the relative calm in the state’s waterways had contributed to improved oil production.
“I saw new developments at the base, and I must thank you for the support. We ask for sustained collaboration so we can continue to carry out our duties effectively,” he added.
The visit ended with assurances from both the state government and the Nigerian Navy to deepen cooperation in securing Delta State, the Niger Delta region, and Nigeria’s maritime economy.
